Véronique La Hausse de Lalouvière presented the project “setting up a community health care and education network” which has been operating in Mauritius since 2007 at the forum organised by Novo Nordisk – France, at the Sofitel Hotel in Flic en Flac from 31 May – 1 June 2008.
This one year pilot project, financed by the European Commission through the Decentralised Cooperation Program, provides a preventative and educational follow up to 300 persons with diabetes and cardio vascular risks and it is being implemented using the “Learning Nest” approach developed by Dr Xavier Debussche and Maryvette Balcou Debussche.
The results obtained in an intermediate evaluation were very encouraging as they showed a significant drop in some of the risk factors linked to diabetes (blood sugar, blood pressure, waist measurement, smoking).
Véronique also presented a similar approach implemented by APSA Burundi and financed by the World Diabetes Foundation, for a period of 3 years in partnership with the consultants and trainers, Dr Xavier Debussche and Maryvette Balcou Debussche in Burundi. These 2 days meetings provided an opportunity to discuss about the various educational approaches practised in the region.
