Did you know?

STAR FRUIT MAY NOT BE AS GOOD FOR YOU AS YOU THINK IT IS.

Tip of the day: Avoid star fruit, commonly known as “carambole”, if you currently have kidney failure, kidney stones or are undergoing dialysis treatment!

Star fruit is an excellent source of potassium and vitamin C and is very rich in anti-oxidants. As well as providing us with a stronger immune system and a glowing skin, it also helps to reduce high blood pressure and heart disease.

However, star fruit is rich in oxalic acid and caramboxin. Excess accumulation of oxalic acid and caramboxin in the body (due to the kidneys inability to remove it) can be fatal, damaging the kidneys further for patients with kidney injury.

Even as little as 25ml of star fruit juice or 1/2 a star fruit can lead to irreversible damage for patients suffering from any form of kidney disease. Some symptoms can include mental confusion, nausea, coma and eventually death.

Of course start fruit is still a highly nutritious fruit and you can eat it carefree unless otherwise advised by a doctor or are experiencing side effects from it.
