Burundi & Diabetes

Burundi has just emerged from 12 years of civil war; until now, international aid andfunding has mainly been focused on emergency issues rather than development projects. The priority has therefore been oriented towards three critical diseases affecting the country namely Malaria, AIDS and Malnutrition. Through recent studies the government of Burundi is now also becoming aware of the alarming increase in diabetes and its affect on the country. Following a study in the Hospital of Kamenge (Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Kamenge), statistics reveal that diabetes represents the third largest cause of hospitalization in Burundi, out of 100 diabetes patients admitted to hospital, 1 death, 40 cases of renal failure and 15 foot amputations were recorded in 2004.
